SANDY, Utah -- Real Salt Lake gave a perfect lesson on how to dominate an opponent on both sides of the ball. For 90 minutes, Salt Lake combined aggressive offence and relentless defence to limit shots, control possession and set up easy scoring chances. Kyle Beckerman scored two goals, while rookie forward Devon Sandoval and Luis Gil added one apiece, to lead Salt Lake to a 4-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday night. "This, for me, is the most complete match weve played the entire season," Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis said. The win kept Salt Lake (13-8-6) atop the MLS standings. Gils goal was Salt Lakes 47th of the season, breaking the previous franchise record of 46 set in 2012. Beckerman gave the team No. 48 right before the end of the second half. Columbus (8-12-5) snapped a two-game winning streak, denying Crew coach Robert Warzycha his 71st career win with the team and becoming the clubs all-time leader in coaching victories. "We didnt match their intensity," Warzycha said. "They were first to the ball -- especially in the first half. Even though they only scored one goal, they were much sharper." Much of Salt Lakes scoring frenzy came about because the team practically refused to let Columbus touch the ball for long stretches. Salt Lake controlled possession for 65 per cent of the time through both halves. It allowed the Crew just one shot before halftime and limited them to four total shots. Salt Lake, on the other hand, had 17 total shots and put seven on goal. "Our best defence is when we have the ball," Beckerman said. "If were possessing it well and were creating chances and were getting corner kicks and were keeping them pinned in, then it makes our defence a little bit easier." Still, Salt Lake had little to show for its efforts until the waning moments before halftime. The Crew defence clamped down and initially made it difficult for Salt Lake to finish any scoring chances. Columbus had a good scoring chance on its lone first-half shot in the 37th minute when Federico Higuain sent in a right footer on an angle toward the right post. Nick Rimando intercepted the ball at the post to keep the Crew from breaking the scoreless tie. Everything changed in the final minute of the half with Beckermans deflected goal, which ended a 230-minute stretch for Columbus without giving up any goals. Javier Morales set things in motion when he bounced a free kick off Will Trapp on the right end of the Crews four-man defensive wall. The ball then ricocheted off Beckermans foot behind the wall and trickled inside the right post to make it 1-0. "It really took a lot of steam out of them to get that goal right before half," Beckerman said. "A lot of teams will come in here and are just going to sit in and try to get 0-0 into halftime and then see if they can sneak something in (later). So to get that was big for us." Salt Lake added to its advantage early in the second half as Sandoval made it 2-0 in the 51st minute when he flicked a cross from Garcia to him inside the 6-yard box inside the left post. Columbus nearly cut into the lead in the 77th when a throw-in from Josh Williams bounced inside the 6-yard box to Ryan Finley. Finley headed the ball toward the right post, but it went just wide. Gil added an insurance goal in the 83rd. Ned Grabavoy flicked a short through ball ahead to him deep in the box. Gil sidestepped a defender and buried the ball down the centre. Beckerman capped the scoring in the 89th when he threaded the ball inside the left post. "They proved tonight why they are in first place," Crew defender Josh Williams said. "Theyre really good on the ball possession wise. We just couldnt keep track of them." Higuain was sent off with a red card in the 90th and will be suspended for the Crews match at Seattle next weekend. Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood launched himself down the touchline pumping his fists after Gylfi Sigurdsson completed a fight back from 2-0 down at home to Southampton to win 3-2. The victory kept Tottenham in touch with the Champions League places, with the London club six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal. Tottenham has played an extra game. Stoke climbed above Villa into 10th place after hitting back to win 4-1, the teams first away success in the league since August which took the weekend goal tally in the league to 42. Chelsea remains top of the league after crushing Arsenal 6-0, with Liverpool second following a 6-3 win at Swansea and third-placed Manchester City beating Fulham 5-0. Returning to the top four remains Tottenhams aspiration but Sherwoods defence will have to be tighter and less error-prone to achieve that. Jay Rodriguez put Southampton ahead on the break in the 19th minute at White Hart Lane after Tottenham defender Kyle Naughton managed to miss goalkeeper Artur Borucs kick. Rodriguez took advantage to slot the ball into the bottom corner of the net beyond Hugo Lloris reach. Naughton was at fault for Southamptons second, as his half-clearance went straight to Rickie Lambert who fed Lallana to sweep in his ninth goal of the season. But it was slackness in the Southampton defence that gave Tottenham a route back into the game in the 31st. Naacer Chadli teed up Naughton, whose cross was only partially blocked by Nathaniel Clyne and Christian Eriksen slammed the ball into the net at the back post.dddddddddddd Whatever Sherwood then said at halftime to his players worked. "It wasnt ranting and raving, it was considered and it was measured what I had to say to them," Sherwood recalled. "I wanted to play a high-tempo game and press them high up the field and I didnt think we had the energy to do it." But Eriksen was on target again in the first minute of the second half. Roberto Soldado outmuscled Dejan Lovren off the ball on the left flank, and squared for Eriksen to tap in from close range. Then, with it appearing the points would be shared, Eriksen laid the ball off for Sigurdsson to score his fourth league goal of the season. "It takes real guts, character and spirit to do that (comeback) and we showed that today -- brilliant," Sherwood said. At Villa Park, the hosts went in front after just five minutes through Christian Benteke. But Peter Odemwingie scored his third goal in two games to equalize in the 22nd minute and Peter Crouch seized on slack marking to put Stoke ahead four minutes later. When Leandro Bacuna and Nathan Baker both failed to clear the ball just before halftime, Steven Nzonzi scored from inside the penalty area. It took Stoke until the 90th to score again, with Geoff Cameron netting his second goal of the season. "At the start of the season we might have collapsed but we showed weve definitely improved," Stoke striker Peter Crouch said. ' ' '
