CLEVELAND -- Browns running back Montario Hardesty underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and will likely miss at least the first two regular-season games. The team said Hardestys operation "went as expected" on Thursday. Hardestys football career has been slowed by knee problems. The former second-round draft pick has had the anterior cruciate ligament in both knees repaired. Hardesty missed most of training camp with a hamstring tendon issue and then dislocated his right thumb in practice on Monday while trying to catch a direct snap from centre. With Hardesty out of action, Dion Lewis and Brandon Jackson will compete for the backup spot behind starter Trent Richardson. Hardesty rushed for 271 yards last season, his third with Cleveland. He missed his entire rookie season in 2010 after tearing his ACL in the final exhibition game. There are many high profile pitchers who will be on the move this off-season, and one name that could be traded is Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels. With the Phillies looking to rebuild, dealing the lefty would help recoup young assets and, as ESPN’s Jayson Stark notes, the Boston Red Sox would make a perfect match. The Red Sox have been developing some top prospects that could be part of a potential deal such as Mookie Betts, Blake Swihart, Henry Owens as well as many others. Hamels has a no-trade list which includes the Red Sox, but with the recent additions of Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval, the San Diego native could potentially waive that right and accept a deal to Boston. Stark points out however that Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. could decide to hold on to Hamels and make him the main bargaining chip at the 2015 trade deadline in order to maximize his value, due to the supply of top arms available this winter. Hamels registered a 9-9 recordd with a 2.dddddddddddd.46 earned run average and 198 strikeouts with the Phillies this past season. Replacing Panda With Pablo Sandoval signing in Boston, the San Francisco Giants now have a void at third base and are looking at options to fill the spot. According to ESPN’s Doug Mittler, sources report Chase Headley is the top option, though Cuban outfielder Yamany Tomas also remains an option to help fill the loss of power from Sandoval’s departure. ESPN’s Jim Bowden also weighed in on the subject and listed Minnesota Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe and Boston’s Will Middlebrooks as other third base options, although they would not have the same impact as Sandoval did for the Giants. Miami’s First Priority The Miami Marlins are hoping to upgrade at the first base position which is currently held by Garrett Jones.
